2.My husband and I were traveling in Italy, with two small babies.

21.and went back to the kitchen.

22.We thought perhaps we should leave right then,

23.but before we could decide what to do,

24.he reappeared with his wife and teenage daughter.

25.Beaming as they crossed the dining room,

26.the two women threw out their arms, cried,

27.“Oh, babies!” and took the children from our arms,

28.motioning us to sit at a quiet corner table.

29.For the duration of a long and hospitable dinner,

30.they walked the babies back and forth in the back of the dining room,

31.cooing, laughing and singing them to sleep in gentle, musical Italian.

32.The proprietor even insisted we stay and have an extra glass of wine

33.after the babies were asleep!
